How to Compare This Year vs Last Year on the Line Chart
If you want to see a monthly comparison of Last Year vs.This Year on the same chart; you can't rely on dashboard or widget filters as they are mutually exclusive. You have to use multiple data sets; i.e. multiple 'Values'. Depending if you want to limit the results of this year to date and of last year to date or if you want to see the whole last year and this year to date; you should apply PAST or NEXT functions.
How to Build:
If you want to see the whole last year and this year-to-date apply NEXT function together with 'Last Year' dashboard filter.
If you want to compare this year-to-date to last year-to-date apply PAST function together with 'This Year' dashboard filter.
- Choose the Date-Time field in 'Categories' and set the widget filter to Last Year (or This Year for 'Past function' version):
- The first value or the first data set will be straight forward and because of the widget filter; it will show you Past Year data or This Year for 'Past function' version). Name this data set accordingly.
- The second value will use the NEXT function when you want to see all Past Year months. Name this data set accordingly as This Year.
Use the PAST function when you want to see year-to-date comparison only.
Name this data set accordingly as Last Year; then drag and drop to the above position.
